Terms of Service
Effective 29 May 2026
These terms cover your use of Pelorus — the app, this website, and the optional convoy relay that goes with them. We’ve kept them short and in plain language. By installing or using Pelorus you agree to them.

1. Agreement
By downloading, installing, or using Pelorus, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the app. If you use Pelorus on behalf of an organisation, you confirm you’re allowed to accept these terms for it.
2. What Pelorus is — and is not
Pelorus is an instrument, not a navigation service. It shows you a direction and a distance to a point you choose. That is all it claims to do.
Read this part carefully:
- It is not turn-by-turn navigation. It does not know roads, paths, water, cliffs, traffic, closures, or hazards. The straight-line bearing it shows may point across things you cannot or must not cross.
- Do not rely on Pelorus as your sole means of navigation, and never as a safety-of-life tool. Carry proper maps, charts, and judgement, especially at sea, in the air, in the backcountry, or in poor visibility.
- Compass accuracy depends on your device. Magnetometers drift, need calibration, and are thrown off by metal, magnets, and electronics. Treat the needle as guidance, not gospel.
- Obey the law and common sense. Do not operate your phone while driving or riding. If you mount the device, set your destination before you set off and keep your attention on the road.
- In convoy mode, a rider’s mark can be stale. Coverage gaps mean a position may be older than it looks. The app ages stale marks, but you should still confirm with the people you’re travelling with.
You use Pelorus at your own risk and remain responsible for your own route and safety.
3. Your licence to use the app
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use Pelorus on devices you own or control, for your own non-commercial use, in line with these terms and the app-store rules that apply to your download (Apple’s or Google’s).
Please don’t: reverse-engineer, decompile, or tamper with the app except where the law expressly allows it; resell, rent, or sublicense it; remove our notices; or use it to break the law or anyone’s rights.
4. Convoy and purchases
Solo mode — the compass — is free.
Convoy is an optional feature that lets a small group share live position with each other. Hosting a convoy may require a one-time, non-consumable in-app purchase. Joining a convoy is free.
- All purchases are made and processed through the Apple App Store or Google Play. We never see or handle your payment details. Their terms, pricing, taxes, and refund policies govern the transaction — direct refund requests to the relevant store.
- A purchase unlocks the feature on accounts and devices that the store associates with it. If you reinstall or switch devices, use Restore Purchases to recover it.
- Because the relay is stateless and never checks receipts, an active convoy keeps running even if an entitlement later changes; only starting a new convoy is gated.
5. The convoy relay — acceptable use
The relay is a small server we run to forward convoy positions in real time. It is provided as a convenience on a best-effort basis. When using it, you agree not to:
- abuse, overload, probe, or attempt to disrupt the service, or circumvent its rate limits;
- use it to transmit anything unlawful, or to share another person’s location without their knowledge and consent;
- access convoys you weren’t invited to.
The relay is stateless and rate-limited, may be unavailable at times, and we may change, suspend, or withdraw it at any time without notice. We don’t guarantee delivery, uptime, or that any position is current.
6. Privacy
What data Pelorus touches, and what leaves your device, is set out in the Privacy Policy. In short: solo location stays on your device, convoy sharing is opt-in and relayed through an EU server that retains nothing, and there are no accounts, ads, analytics, or trackers.
7. Intellectual property
Pelorus — its name, the pelorus mark, the design, the typography choices, the text, and the software — belongs to the operator or its licensors, except for third-party components used under their own open-source or other licences. These terms don’t transfer any of that to you beyond the licence in section 3.
8. Disclaimers
Pelorus and the relay are provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, accurate, or that the bearings, distances, or convoy positions it shows are correct or current.
Some jurisdictions don’t allow certain warranties to be excluded, so some of the above may not apply to you. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have as a consumer that cannot be limited by law.
9. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the operator will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss arising from your reliance on the app’s directions or your inability to use the service — including getting lost, delayed, or off-route. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid for the app (if any) in the twelve months before the claim.
10. Changes
We may update the app and these terms. If we make a material change to these terms, we’ll update the effective date above and post the new version here. Continuing to use Pelorus after a change means you accept it. We may also change or discontinue features — including convoy or the relay — over time.
11. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Romania, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules, and subject to any mandatory consumer protections of the country where you live. Disputes will be handled by the competent courts of Romania.
